The goal of this Privacy Statement is to inform you of the way in which Shipping Technology B.V. collects and processes personal data using the Black Box Pro.
Shipping Technology B.V. (‘Shipping Technology’) acts as controller in regard to the data processing via the Black Box Pro. To whom does this Privacy Statement apply?
This Privacy Statement Applies to you if you are a crew member of an inland shipping vessel on which a Black Box Pro is installed.
What is the Black Box Pro?
The Black Box Pro is a powerful computer to which nautical equipment is connected. This Black Box Pro collects the data produced by the nautical equipment and sends it to Shipping Technology via a cellular network. The installation of the Black Box Pro is carried out by one of Shipping Technology’s installation partners. The Black Box Pro can be remotely updated with new software.
What personal data do we process?
The Black Box Pro collects data from the nautical equipment that is present on the inland shipping vessel and possibly from public sources. It concerns the following personal data:
- Data about sailing behaviour (navigation commands and rate-of-turn data), engine RPM, and location data that are collected via the link to nautical systems, such as radar and piloting systems, GPS (fore and aft), engine management (main engines), wind meters, cameras, and marine VHF radio;
- The ship’s location data;
- Automatic Identification System (AIS) data, the Maritime Mobile Service Identity (MMSI), the European Vessel Identification Number, and other ship data that can possibly traced back to individual crew members (Chamber of Commerce registration, etc.);
- In some cases: camera footage on which induvial crew members can be identified.
For what purposes do we process your personal data?Shipping Technology uses the aforementioned data to develop software that could be developed in the future to support crew members with controlling inland shipping vessels and/or software for autonomous shipping. In addition, Shipping Technology processes the aforementioned data to offer the skipper or shipping company services that provide insight into the collected data.
What is the reason for processing your personal data?
The goal of Shipping Technology is to develop a self-sailing inland shipping vessel. In order to achieve this objective, Shipping Technology collects data via the Black Box Pro. This data is essential for the development of autonomously navigating ships. Shipping Technology therefore has a legitimate interest in processing the personal data as described in this Privacy Statement.
With whom can we share your personal data?
Shipping Technology will not share your personal data with third parties, unless obligated to do so pursuant to the law or a court order.
Will your personal data be processed outside of the EEA?
No, your personal data will only be processed within the European Economic Area.
Will your personal data be secure?
We have taken several appropriate technical and organisational security measures to protect the personal data of you that we process against loss or illegitimate use. Shipping Technology constantly evaluates and improves these security measures.
How long will we store your personal data?
Shipping Technology does not retain personal data for longer than is necessary for the development of the software. In any event, personal data will not be retained for longer than three years.
Your rights as a data subject
You have the right to access, rectification, and erasure of personal data related to you. You can also object to the use of your personal data or request a restriction of this use. In certain cases, you can also request that we forward your personal data to another party. If you wish to exercise these rights, you may request Shipping Technology to do so via the contact details mentioned in this Privacy Statement. Please state clearly which personal data it concerns. We may ask you for additional information in order to confirm your identity.
