De Vera Pax maakt deel uit van een vloot van vier schepen en vaart door uitgestrekte gebieden, van de Noordzee tot aan de Zwarte Zee. De manier waarop hij het aanpakte, vanuit zijn ervaring als schipper, en hoe Shipping Technology begon met experimenteren, dat gaf me direct het gevoel dat dit de juiste aanpak was op de lange termijn.&#8221; De keuze voor Shipping Technology, en specifiek voor de ST BRAIN, was voor hem een logische stap. &#8220;Ik vond het interessant. Ze begonnen eerst met de ontwikkeling van de ST BRAIN en na afloop daarvan waren wij een van de eersten die experimenteerden met de Autonomous Lane Assist (ALA) in 2022. Maar vooral vandaag de dag, met de ST BRAIN die ons helpt bij het vastleggen van incidenten en aanvaringen, vind ik het toch wel een zekerheid.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over het gebruik van het ST Dashboard vertelt Fabian: \u2018\u2018Voor mij is het niet nodig om constant in het dashboard te duiken.&#8221; Toch erkent Fabian de potentie van de ST BRAIN bij een groeiende vloot: &#8220;Wanneer je een hele vloot beheert, wordt het natuurlijk interessanter. Ook wanneer je met vreemd personeel werkt is het wel makkelijk als je terug kunt kijken. Wat waren de verhoudingen, hoe hard draaien de motoren in verhouding tot de snelheid, etcetera.\u2019\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hij voegt toe over het nut van de ST BRAIN in noodsituaties: \u201cHet is essentieel om aanvaringen en dat soort dingen vast te kunnen leggen. Bij een aanvaring in de nacht, die bij ons onopgemerkt bleef, hebben we dankzij de ST BRAIN de dader achteraf kunnen opsporen.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"985\" height=\"656\" src=\"https:\/\/concept.websteks.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/WhatsApp-Image-2024-06-03-at-12.44.35.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-561\" srcset=\"https:\/\/shippingtechnology.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/WhatsApp-Image-2024-06-03-at-12.44.35.jpg 985w, https:\/\/shippingtechnology.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/WhatsApp-Image-2024-06-03-at-12.44.35-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/shippingtechnology.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/WhatsApp-Image-2024-06-03-at-12.44.35-768x511.jpg 768w, https:\/\/shippingtechnology.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/WhatsApp-Image-2024-06-03-at-12.44.35-600x400.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 985px) 100vw, 985px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Fabian legt uit over het gebruik van de ALA aan boord. &#8220;Het zorgt voor rust,&#8221; merkt hij op, reflecterend op de uitgestrekte gebieden die ze bevaren &#8211; van de Rijn tot de Donau, van eenvoudige tot complexe trajecten. &#8220;Op de makkelijke stukken biedt de ALA een stukje gemoedsrust, terwijl ik op de moeilijke stukken graag nog zelf vaar en de controle over neem, gewoon omdat ik het leuk vind.&#8221; Echter erkent hij ook de risico&#8217;s van menselijke onoplettendheid. &#8220;Op de makkelijke stukken zien we vaker ongevallen. Ongevallen gebeuren vaak wanneer je het het minst verwacht, wanneer de alertheid daalt. De ALA helpt op dit soort momenten, als die het even van je overneemt.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over de toekomstvisie van autonoom varen heeft Fabian een duidelijke mening. &#8220;Echt autonoom varen, dat zie ik voorlopig nog niet gebeuren. Hulpmiddelen zoals de Autonomous Lane Assist zijn precies dat: hulpmiddelen die het varen vergemakkelijken,&#8221; legt hij uit. Fabian ziet deze technologie\u00ebn als toevoegingen die rust en comfort bieden, maar waarschuwt dat ze niet de noodzakelijke kennis en vaardigheden van de schipper mogen vervangen.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In een wereld waar computers steeds slimmer worden, benadrukt hij de noodzaak om de kunst van het varen te koesteren. &#8220;Varen blijft een vak,&#8221; geeft Fabian aan. &#8220;Op een gegeven moment worden de computers echt slimmer dan wij zijn en er gaat zoveel kennis op een gegeven moment verloren. Varen door de stromende rivieren, een schip door een sluis manoeuvreren, een schip aanleggen, dat blijft een vak. Maar we moeten opletten dat de technologie er niet voor zorgt dat ons vak verloren gaat.&#8221; Voor Fabian ligt de ware uitdaging in het vinden van een balans waar techniek het vakmanschap ondersteunt, zonder het te overweldigen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hij sluit af met een krachtige statement: &#8220;Het vakmanschap kan niet zonder technologie, maar de technologie kan zeker niet zonder vakmanschap.
